*Somewhere in the foothills of the western Sierra Nevadas, there is the dilapidated remnants of a fort. It's very old now: the buildings started their lives as a Spanish mission, became a fort some time in the early 1800s and by 1847 only one soldier remained.
*That soldier is still here. At the moment he is unbarring a side gate to let in a visitor, the first proper visitor in some time. Stranded passersby don't really count . . .*
